Buy the blanket named for your bed, and go one size up if two people share it or you like the sides fully covered. A throw is 50 x 60 inches and belongs on the couch. Everything else is sized to drape over a mattress.
That is the short answer. The chart below gives the real measurements of our blankets, so you can check them against your own bed before you order. Shop all blankets and throws when you know your size.

Throw vs Throw XL: sizing for a couch
A throw is 50 x 60 inches. It covers one person from lap to toes. It folds small over the arm of a sofa. It does not cover a bed.
A Throw XL is the same width with ten more inches of length, 50 x 70. Choose it if you are tall, or if you like to lie down on the couch with your feet tucked in.
For the couch, fleece is the easy pick. The Fleece Plush Solid Blanket comes in Throw and Throw XL in more than a dozen colors. It is medium weight and soft on the skin, with reinforced edges that keep a clean line when it is draped over a cushion.
Twin and Twin XL
A standard twin mattress is 38 x 75 inches. A Twin XL is 38 x 80. Our twin blanket is 66 x 90, and one size fits both.
On a twin, that leaves about 14 inches hanging on each side and 15 inches extra in length. On a Twin XL, the sides are the same and you keep 10 inches at the foot. Enough to tuck. Enough to pull up to your chin.
Full/Queen: one size, two beds
We make one size for full and queen beds. The cotton blankets measure 88 x 90 inches. The fleece blankets measure 90 x 90.
- On a full bed (54 x 75 inches): about 17 inches of drape per side. Generous.
- On a queen bed (60 x 80 inches): about 14 inches per side and 10 inches extra at the foot.
So if you searched for a full size blanket or a queen size cotton blanket, this is the one. The Diamond Weave Cotton Thermal Blanket is 100% cotton with a thermal weave. It holds warmth without feeling heavy.
King and California King
A king mattress is 76 x 80 inches. Our king blankets are 90 inches on one side and 106 to 108 on the other.
Here is the part most size charts skip. A blanket is a rectangle, and you choose which way it lies.
- Long side across the bed: about 15 to 16 inches of drape per side, and 10 inches extra at the foot. This is the way to lay it when two people share the bed.
- Long side head to foot: about 7 inches per side and plenty of length to fold back over a comforter.
A California King mattress is 72 x 84 inches. The California King cotton blanket is 108 x 100, which gives about 18 inches per side. It also works on a standard king if you want the sides fully covered.
Should you size up?
Three cases where the next size is the better buy:
- Two sleepers. Blankets travel in the night. Extra width means nobody wakes up uncovered.
- A tall mattress. A thick mattress or a topper uses up drape. If yours is deep, the sides of a blanket in your bed's size will sit higher than you expect.
- Cotton, before the first wash. Our cotton blankets are cut generously to allow for 5 to 8% natural shrinkage. Wash cold and tumble dry low to keep it at the low end.
One case where you should not: a blanket you plan to layer under a comforter or bedspread. There, the size made for your bed sits flat and stays put.
Pick the fabric after the size
Size decides whether it fits. Fabric decides how it feels at two in the morning.
Cotton thermal. Woven, breathable, light on the bed. A layer for every season: on its own in warm months, under a comforter when it turns cold. It gets softer with every wash. Our cotton blankets are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, ensuring they are tested and free from harmful substances.
Cotton waffle weave. The Cotton Waffle Blanket has a raised texture that traps small pockets of air. Lightweight. Textured. A clean, modern look on a made bed.
Fleece. Plush and velvety, with warmth you feel the moment you pull it up. The Alaska Diamond Fleece Blanket is medium weight with an embossed diamond pattern, and it comes in every size from Throw to King.
Sherpa. Two blankets in one. The Nuuk Sherpa Fleece Blanket is reversible, with a lattice pattern on one side and fluffy sherpa on the other. Medium weight, for cozy nights on the couch or an extra layer in the bedroom.
Care, in one minute
Cotton blankets: machine wash separately in cold water and tumble dry low. Skip high heat. A little lint in the first washes is normal and fades with time. Our guide on how to care for a cotton blanket covers the details.
Fleece and sherpa blankets: they arrive vacuum packed. Fluff by hand and let them rest for 24 hours. After that, machine wash and tumble dry low.
Always follow the care label on your blanket.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a queen size blanket?
Our Full/Queen blankets measure 88 x 90 inches in cotton and 90 x 90 inches in fleece. On a 60 x 80 inch queen mattress, that leaves about 14 inches of drape on each side.
What size throw blanket is right for a couch?
A standard throw is 50 x 60 inches and covers one person sitting up. Choose a Throw XL at 50 x 70 inches if you are tall or like to lie down on the sofa.
Will a Full/Queen blanket fit a full size bed?
Yes. A full mattress is 54 inches wide, so a Full/Queen blanket hangs about 17 inches over each side.
What size blanket do I need for a king bed?
A King blanket, 90 inches by 106 to 108 inches. Lay the long side across the bed for about 15 to 16 inches of drape per side. For even more coverage, the California King cotton blanket is 108 x 100 inches.
Are cotton blankets warm?
Yes. A cotton thermal weave holds warmth while staying breathable, so it works alone on mild nights and as a layer under a comforter in winter. For more warmth from a single blanket, choose fleece or sherpa.
